Whooping Cough Epidemic in California Kills 5 Babies

6/23/10

AP-

LOS ANGELES —

State health officials say whooping cough is now an epidemic in California and is on pace to break a 50-year record for infections and deaths for the year.

As of June 15, California had 910 recorded cases of the highly contagious disease, and five babies — all under 3 months of age — have died from the disease this year.

California Department of Public Health director Dr. Mark Horton said today that children should be vaccinated against the disease and parents, caregivers and infants need a booster shot.

A typical case of the disease, formally called pertussis, starts with a cough and runny nose for one to two weeks, followed by weeks to months of rapid coughing fits that sometimes end with a whooping sound. Fever is rare.

Medical Journal Retracts Article Linking Vaccines and Autism

Tuesday , February 02, 2010

LONDON  —

A major British medical journal on Tuesday retracted a flawed study linking the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine to autism and bowel disease.

The retraction by The Lancet comes a day after a competing medical journal, BMJ, issued an embargoed commentary calling for The Lancet to formally retract the study. The commentary was to have been published on Wednesday.

The BMJ commentary said once the study by British surgeon and medical researcher Andrew Wakefield and his colleagues appeared in 1998 in The Lancet, "the arguments were considered by many to be proven and the ghastly social drama of the demon vaccine took on a life of its own."

Since the controversial paper was published, British parents abandoned the vaccine in droves, leading to a resurgence of measles. Subsequent studies have found no proof that the vaccine is connected to autism, though some parents are still wary of the shot.

In Britain, vaccination rates for measles have never recovered and there are outbreaks of the disease every year.

Ten of Wakefield's 13 co-authors renounced the study's conclusions several years ago and The Lancet has previously said it should never have published the research.

"We fully retract this paper from the published record," Lancet editors said in a statement Tuesday.

Last week, Britain's General Medical Council ruled that Wakefield had shown a "callous disregard" for the children used in his study and acted unethically. Wakefield and the two colleagues who have not renounced the study face being stripped of their right to practice medicine in Britain.

For the study, Wakefield took blood samples from children at his son's birthday party, paying them 5 pounds each ($8) for their contributions and later joking about the incident.

9/2/10

We have received our nasal flu vaccine, FLuMist, for the 2010-11 flu season.

It is appropriate for patients 2 years and older who have no history of recurrent wheezing, recurrent inhaler use, or an official diagnosis of asthma.

We will update this site when the other types of flu vaccine are available.

Flu Vaccines 2010-11

8/1/10

Can we believe that the school year is about to begin?  Unfortunately this also means that influenza will not be far behind!

The appearance of the 2009 H1N1 flu strain made last year a unique experience.  While we do not know when or how the H1N1 strain will reappear, we do know that children were hard hit last year (279 deaths, four times the average of the five previous seasons before H1N1).

We also know that vaccination will be much easier this year:  the seasonal influenza vaccine will protect against three strains of influenza, including the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus which caused the 2009 pandemic. Last year because the 2009 H1N1 virus emerged after production began on the seasonal vaccine, two separate vaccines were needed.  But this year, only one vaccine is necessary.

Our office will again be able to offer the vaccine in two forms:  Injectable for all ages 6 months and up, and a nasal mist for ages two years and up (and no history of asthma or recurrent wheezing).

We anticipate beginning immunization service in September.  Stay tuned!

Insurance Card Fun

 5/21/10

Please be mindful of the fact that parents/family members are required to present health insurance cards and proof of identification at each visit.

While it may not be so convenient, it is important for our office to be able to follow both the law and also abide by our insurance contracts:  we need to be able to verify identity and insurance coverage.  This protects patient privacy and protected health information as well as identifies any important changes in insurance coverage for our patients.

Thanks!
